Electronic identity card for people with the Belgian nationality

Description

The electronic identity card plays a double role: it will allow its holder to make himself known and identified and permits him to use an authentic declared signature. The electronic identity card more especially allows its holder to have access to his personal file by the public authorities, ask some documents through an electronic locket, take benefit of some applications (local, regional or federal ones).

Validity

  • 10 years
  • 6 years for minors older then 12 but younger than 18
  • 30 years for adults of 75 or older

When renewing the card, the old card must be handed in.

Documents to bring

  • the convocation sent by the Service of Population – except voluntary request

Note: Identity photos are now taken directly at the administration office (except for children under 3, who still need to bring their own photo).

  • Urgent procedure (1 day): €134,70
  • Procedure for urgency (1 day) with centralised delivery at FPS Interior (Parc Atrium – 11 Rue des Colonies, access via rue Montagne du Parc 2): €165,20

PIN/PUK code

In case of loss of PIN/PUK codes, new codes can be requested by phoning the electronic identity card service (02/773.05.46).

Delivery time of 2 weeks. Cost: €10,10.
 

Information on the eID

  • Personal data visible to the naked eye and electronically readable: Surname, two first given (fore)names, first letter of the third given (fore)name, nationality, place and date of birth, sex, place of issue, date of issue and date of expiry of the card, a picture of the cardholder, a holder’s signature, a signature by the issuing authority and an identification number of the National Register.
  • Personal data electronically readable: The identity and signature keys, identity and signature certificates, the accredited certification authority, the necessary information to the card identification as well as the protection of electronically readable data stated on the card as well as the use of linked certificates and the main residence of the cardholder.
Please note that a surcharge of €10 is required for non-residents (registered with a diplomatic/consular post).
 

Electronic cards for members of European Union

Description

Every EU-citizen has the possibility to ask for an electronic form of them (respectively E card and E+ card). However, the electronic card is not compulsory for this category of foreigners.

Practically, to travel in the Schengen area, the EU citizen must only have relevant documents delivered by its homecountry (national passport, identity card).

Electronic cards for non EU

Description
 

According to the purpose of the stay, different types of card are delivered:

  • model A: registration population register – temporary stay
  • model B: registration foreigners register
  • model K: Residence permit long stay
  • model L: Permanent residence permit

Note valid for EID, Kid’s ID and EID not BE

If your electronic identity card is lost or stolen, you must take the following steps:

For Belgians :

  • Either go to the Population Department of your local authority or the nearest police station.
  • Or contact DOCSTOP of the FPS Interior on 00800 2123 2123 or +32 2 518 2123. This number is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If an EID is lost, stolen or destroyed, it will be cancelled immediately.

To apply for a new identity card, contact your local authority.

For foreigners :

  • Report the loss or theft to the police.
  • This declaration must be presented to the local authority in order for the residence permit to be replaced.
